Healthy Air for Vienna

Brunnbauer1. AuflApril 2022

Realizing that there is a need for an air reservoir for Vienna, architect Ferstel and the Cottage Verein were also responsible for the creation of ’Türkenschanzpark’. Ferstel wanted an extension of the Cottage-garden-district by Türkenschanzpark to create a huge air reservoir for the western part of Vienna. After the old city walls and the ’Limes’, the old outer city defense walls in the ’Gürtel’ area, were torn down, the city expanded towards the west, that is towards Währing and Cottage. It can be justifiably construed that this concept of an air reservoir was the first philosophical base for the City of Vienna’s decree in 1905 to conserve a forest and meadow belt around the city, as a ’green lung’ for Vienna. Ferstel’s ’healthy air concept’ is as significant as the efforts of Josef Schöffel saving the ’Wienerwald’ from deforestation.
