The Cottage Verein was originally founded to provide on a non-profit basis for the middle-class affordable living accommodation in a healthy environment. Since its inception in 1872, however, Cottage was also always very well received by the better-to-do Viennese as well. For this very reason, the Cottage District has grown in the end from the original 51 houses to 620 today.
